The Adventures of Cardboy Development Begins!
Welcome to the development log for The Adventures of Cardboy
In this first post I am excited to kick off development of a new turn-based RPG, inspired by the charm and style of the original Paper Mario games. The goal is to create a uniquely visual story-driven experience that encourages strategic combat. The game is being developed in Unity using C# and has already experienced initial designs and implementation.
Early Development
So far, the foundation has been layed down for initial design elements and UI implementation, all menus, options, loading screens and game overlays have been developed and integrated. Additionally, development for the Player's movement and animations are in place, allowing for interaction and testing for new and upcoming updates. Design features have been carefully considered, from navigating menus to controlling Cardboy himself as he moves through the world. Given the unique cardboard aesthetic of the game, a lot of attention is being placed on how characters animate and interact with the environment, ensuring that everything feels on-theme.
The turn-based combat has just started early design phases - with implementation already started, hopefully more news to come in the future.
What's Next
Soon, development will truly start for the games combat and main mechanics, forming its main gameplay loop. It is necessary to get enemy encounters to feel engaging and rewarding rather than something players would choose to avoid, so much deliberation is needed to ensure that it feels right to users. Then, world navigation and design will be the final major tasks on the chopping block.
This first blog is mostly framed as an announcement of more to come - stay tuned for future logs and behind the scenes development of the game!
